How to Downgrade iOS 9.1 to iOS 9.0.2

iOS 9.1 is a worthwhile update with bug fixes and new emoji for most iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users who are running iOS 9, but some users who have updated from iOS 9.0.2 to iOS 9.1 may decide they’d like to go back to the earlier version. Maybe it’s because iOS 9.0.2 has a jailbreak, maybe it’s because of some newfound issue experienced with iOS 9.1 which wasn’t there before, whatever the reason, we’ll show you how to quickly downgrade from iOS 9.1 to iOS 9.0.2.

Do note that downgrading is not always possible, and though you can downgrade from iOS 9.1 to iOS 9.0.2 while Apple continues to sign the 9.0.2 release, you can’t use this process to downgrade from iOS 9.1 back to iOS 8.4.1 for example, because no version of iOS 8 is being signed by Apple. This is why upgrading iOS is often a one-way street, Apple tends to close the signing window fairly quickly. Thus, if you do want to ditch iOS 9.1 for some reason and go back to the riveting iOS 9.0.2 release, you’ll want to do it sooner than later.

Downgrade iOS 9.1 Back to iOS 9.0.2

You can do this from iTunes on Mac OS X or Windows PC, it’s not particularly complex though it does involve using IPSW to update iOS similar to how you would with an upgrade, except in this case it’s downgrading to a prior version instead:
1. Back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iTunes or iCloud, if not both – don’t skip this, you don’t want to lose your stuff
2. download the iOS 9.0.2 IPSW file for your specific device, be sure the model matches up to yours otherwise the firmware will not work – put the .ipsw file somewhere easy to find, like the Desktop or My Documents
3. Launch iTunes on the Mac or PC and connect the the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the computer via the devices USB cable
4. Select the device from iTunes and go to the Summary page, then do one of the following:
  • For Mac: OPTION + click the “Check for Update” button
  • For Windows: SHIFT + click the “Update” button
5. Select the iOS 9.0.2 firmware file (the .ipsw file) you downloaded in the second step and choose to Update

Pretty easy, there’s no DFU mode and no recovery mode required, iOS 9.0.2 will install onto your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, replacing iOS 9.1.

It’s easy, but should you do this? For most users, the answer is no. But, if you want to jailbreak iOS 9 on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Pangu tool, you’d have to be running a compatible version of iOS 9.0.2, and that’s probably the only reason to bother leaving iOS 9.1 behind.

How to Use Internet Explorer 11 in Mac OS X the Easy Way

Internet Explorer 11 is a Windows web browser from Microsoft, but those running OS X on a Mac can also use Internet Explorer 11 through a great free service called ModernIE from Microsoft. Being able to run Internet Explorer 11 directly on the Mac without having to access a Windows machine or boot a VM is incredibly useful for web developers and web designers in particular, but some Mac users may find it necessary to use IE 11 in order to access a particular web service or website as well.

Whatever the reason, if you want touse Internet Explorer on a Mac, we’ll show you how to do it in the easiest possible way. Yes, it’s a complete version of IE11, it’s always the latest version, and it works great.

This tip uses a free internet service from Microsoft called Modern IE, which relies on Remote Desktop to access Internet Explorer 11 from Windows but atop OS X. It’s fast, but obviously requires internet service given the reliance on remoting. If you need an offline solution, you should run IE in a virtual machine instead, which is another free approach, albeit a bit more technical.
Requirements for Running Internet Explorer 11 in Mac OS X
Internet access, higher speed is better for performance
Microsoft account, like @hotmail or @outlook email address, these are free and you can sign up for one here if you haven’t done so yet
Download Remote Desktop for Mac from Microsoft from the App Store

Once you’ve met those basic requirements, the rest is really easy to setup.
How to Use Internet Explorer 11 in Mac OS X with IE Tech Preview

This will work to run IE 11 on any version of OS X that Remote Desktop is compatible with, we’re demonstrating here with OS X El Capitan but it will work with Mavericks, Yosemite, Snow Leopard, etc too.
Go to Modern.IE and subscribe to the service with your Microsoft account (this is free), and pick a region nearest you for the best performance – after you subscribe your Microsoft account will get an email saying “You can start using Remote IE right now!”
Now launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop app you downloaded a moment ago

Click on “Azure RemoteApp” in the Remote Desktop titlebar

Now log in to authenticate with your Microsoft account, accepting the invitation to use Internet Explorer

Under ‘Internet Explorer’, double-click on “IE Tech Preview” (or select it and click the Start button)

Wait a moment or two while Internet Explorer 11 loads, in a moment a new IE 11 browser window, complete with the familiar Windows UI, will appear on the Mac desktop

That’s it, you’re ready to use Internet Explorer 11 just as you would if you were running Windows natively. Yes really, this is a complete Internet Explorer web browser on your Mac. You can browse the web as usual, everything is loaded in a true Internet Explorer browser.

Always the Latest Version of Internet Explorer in OS X

The Internet Explorer 11 web browser version will update itself with updates, you do not need to do anything to update IE versions or change software. Each time you connect to the IE Tech Preview, the new version will load automatically.

Complete Access to Internet Explorer Developer Tools on the Mac

For developers and designers, running Internet Explorer 11 this way also offers complete access to the IE Developer Tools which should make it much easier to troubleshoot IE specific issues with syntax, HTML, css, Javascript, or whatever else you’re working on.

You can even launch the Web Inspector Tools in IE into a separate window, which is great for larger displays or multi-screen setups.

On subsequent launches and anytime you want to run Internet Explorer again, you just need to open the Remote Desktop app, go to the Azure section and launch the Internet Explorer Remote IE config again.

You may need to periodically renew a certificate by authenticating with the Microsoft login, but that’s about it.

For those whom were wondering how this works, it’s very similar to using VNC o r Screen Sharing from Mac to Mac in OS X, you’re accessing a remote session (hosted by Microsoft in this case) except rather than accessing an entire computer, it’s just giving you the Internet Explorer web browser.

It’s fast, fluid, and pretty impressive, assuming you have reasonable broadband internet at least. So while it works great if the Mac has a reliable internet connection, it won’t work for offline situations because it’s not truly installing Internet Explorer on the Mac, and it’s not downloading Internet Explorer to the Mac either. If you need a solution that works both online and offline, then running IE in VirtualBox using a free VM is still a great solution, as it downloads IE specifically into a VM on the Mac, but for most casual users or testing purposes, it’s probably unnecessary to have a complete virtual machine when you can use this remote approach instead.

You can add 3D Touch features to your old, jailbroken iPhone

Don’t have an iPhone 6S and you want 3D touch? If you’re willing to jailbreak your phone, you can get it.

With a jailbroken phone running iOS 9, users can point themselves to the Cydia app store to download Forcy, a free app that gives non 3D Touch equipped iPhones 3D Touch capacity. Swiping on an app icon can unlock shortcuts that would need a hard press on an iPhone 6S.

3D Touch is one of the best things about the newest iPhones; it adds a new layer of interaction within the iOS interface.

Of course, not everyone wants to plonk down an armful of cash or enter a complicated contract with a cell carrier for a new phone. If you’re willing to jailbreak your phone — which isn’t something Mashable is recommending you do — Forcy will give you some of the functionality of 3D Touch.

With Forcy, you get Quick Actions for app icons on your home screen, which is a great feature, but unfortunately, that’s it. You’ll miss the haptic feedback of the 6S and you don’t get Peek & Pop preview functionality within apps. Plus, there are security risks with jailbreaking your phone.

So, it’s not great enough to render the 3D Touch-equipped iPhone 6S pointless, but if you’re willing to jailbreak your iPhone, it might be worth playing with. It’s certainly the cheapest way to get 3D Touch functionality on your phone, considering Forcy is free.

How to edit YouTube videos on your iPhone before uploading

With the latest update to the YouTube iOS app, your iPhone has become a mini video-editing studio. Google has added in-app editing tools to its YouTube iOS app that let you trim a video’s start and end points, add filters to tweak the look of that video, and add music to the background for a more cinematic feel.
To upload a video, tap the account button on the right side of the home screen — it looks like the bust of a person. Next, click the upload button — the red circle with the up-arrow.
After selecting a video, you are dumped into the first of the three editing tools. You can trim the beginning and end of your video to select new start and end points. You cannot, however, edit out a part in the middle of a video and splice together two separate clips.

Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET

After trimming your video, tap the middle button of the three at the bottom of the screen. Here, you can select one of six filters.
Lastly, tap the music icon in the lower-right corner to add background music to your video. Tap the Add Music button and you can select from preselected and cleared songs from the Featured or Genre & Mood tabs. Alternatively, you can tap On Device and select a track stored locally on your iPhone, but be warned: the app may tell you the song you picked is copy-protected and can’t be used.

Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET

When your video is set, tap the arrow button in the upper-right corner to head to the Upload screen. Here you can add a title and description and set privacy controls before hitting the paper-airplane button to send your video into the wilds of YouTube.
One last note: after updating the YouTube app, I had to quit out of the app before I got the update.

How to turn off (or turn on) landscape mode on the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus home screen

With the iPhone 6 Plus and the new 6s Plus, you have the ability to use the home screen in landscape mode (with the iPhone held horizontally) or in portrait mode (the iPhone held vertically).

Given the preponderance of vertically-shot videos, you may not want the home screen to switch when your iPhone is in a horizontal position. Sure, it’ll move to a vertical position when you move your phone, but maybe you have your reasons for wanting the home screen to not switch at all. (Because annoying).

Or maybe you’re like me and you want the home screen to switch between landscape and portrait, but it seems stuck on portrait. It won’t switch anymore.

(To help you decide: Some Apple apps, like Contacts and Mail, display a two-pane interface when in landscape mode. Other apps, like Music and Activty, seem to work only in portait mode.)

You can use the orientation lock in Control Center (swipe up from the bottom of the screen), but there's another way to do it. It’s actually not an intuitive setting to adjust, so don’t feel bad if you haven’t figured it out on your own. Also, if you want to turn off landscape switching, know that it comes with a compromise, as you’ll learn about in the steps below.

Turn on/off landscape switching
1. Tap the Settings app.
2. Tap Display & Brightness.
3. In the list of settings, look for Display Zoom. Under that heading, you should see View. Tap it.

4. You will find two tabs to select:
  • If you select Standard, this will allow your home screen to switch between landscape and portrait modes. If this is want you want, tap Standard.
  • If you select Zoomed, this will turn off landscape switching, but everything on your iPhone Plus screen will appear just a bit bigger. If you’re OK with that, tap Zoomed.

    5. Tap Set in the upper right. Your iPhone Plus will restart to implement the changes.

iOS 9 Battery Life Problems? Draining too Fast? Here’s the Solution

Though updating to iOS 9 has gone well for most users, some iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners have discovered their battery is draining faster than usual, and now iOS 9 has given them a reduced battery life. That’s rather frustrating if it impacts you, but much like how iOS 9 slows down some devices but not others, the battery life issue is not a universal experience.

Fortunately, there are some universal solutions to battery draining problems, so if you’ve discovered battery life has reduced after updating to iOS 9, read on to help resolve the issue.

1: Wait! If you just updated to iOS 9…

Keep in mind that if you just updated to iOS 9 (or any other iOS) and have existing data on your device, then iOS features like Spotlight must complete indexing of the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to many hours, depending on how much stuff you have on your device, and how often you use it, so if you have just updated to iOS 9 moments ago and have discovered the battery life is draining inordinately fast, consider just letting it sit for a while and seeing if the battery drain resolves itself. Sometimes it does, if a day passes and it’s still in bad shape, then you can start making adjustments.

    2: Turn Down Screen Brightness

One of the single biggest adjustments you can make to improve battery life of any iPhone or iPad is to reduce the screen brightness. The easiest way to do this is through the Control Center:
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up Control Center, then adjust the brightness slider towards the left – the less bright the screen is, the longer the battery will last

This makes a very noticeable difference, so don’t discount it. The lower the screen brightness, the better the battery will be, but obviously you’ll need to find a happy medium so that you can use and read your screen without it being a total battery hog.

3: Disable Location Services You Don’t Need or Use

Using location services and GPS is heavy on the battery, thus reducing app usage of those features can improve battery life:
Open Settings, go to Privacy, choose Location Services, and adjust each app to the settings appropriate for how you use them – setting to “Never” or “While Using” as needed

You can also turn off ALL location services but that is strongly not recommended, as apps like Weather, Maps, and Siri all rely on obtaining your location data to work properly. If you deny all location functionality, you’ll lose many features on device, so it’s better to be specific about what to disable and what to leave on.

    4: Ditch Background App Activity

Background App Refresh is a well intentioned feature, but in practice it often slows down devices and causes unnecessary battery drain by generating activity in applications that aren’t actively in use. It’s a matter of opinion, but personally I turn this feature off on every iOS device I own, I’d rather have improved battery life and performance than some apps doing stuff in the background.
Open Settings and go to to “General”, choose “Background App Refresh” and turn the top switch to the OFF position to disable the feature

Most users don’t notice any difference with having this turned off in terms of how apps function, but users do tend to notice a speed increase and an improvement to battery life.

    5: Reboot

Finally, sometimes after it has been a while after an update, a hard reboot can often resolve strange issues ranging from weird behavior to minor issues with battery life caused by some errant process.

The simplest way to force a reboot is to hold down the Home button and Power button until the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch restarts itself, as demonstrated by the  Apple logo appearing on screen. The device will boot itself back up to the home screen, ready to be used again.

Those are some of the better general changes you can make to improve battery life in general, but iOS 9 also has improved battery handling features which help you drill down what exactly is eating battery life. Accessible from the Settings app > Battery section, this can be a helpful tool to reveal what is eating battery and why. In the same battery section is also the new Low Power Mode button, and while it undoubtedly improves battery to have that enabled, leaving it on all the time is not really practical as it reduces power consumption, device power, and disables a lot of features you may want to keep using.

Finally, keep in mind you can always downgrade iOS 9 to iOS 8.4.1, though the window of opportunity for that is likely closing soon, which means you’d be stuck on iOS 9 or iOS 9.1.

Have you noticed battery life draining in iOS 9 on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? Maybe your battery life is better with iOS 9 too? Let us know in the comments, and if you have any tricks or tips, share those too!

How to record 4K video on iPhone 6S, 6S Plus

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are both capable of recording 4K high-definition video, though you wouldn't know it just by launching the camera app.

By default, the iOS camera app on the new devices is set to record video at 1080p at 60 frames per second. Should you own a 4K-equipped TV, making it possible to full appreciate the video you capture with your new iPhone, or simply want to future-proof your videos, you'll need to enable 4K by following the steps below.

    • Launch the Settings app.
    • Tap on Photos & Camera.
    • Under the Camera section, tap on Record Video.
    • Tap on 4K at 30 fps.

Once you look at the chart just below the different settings, you'll quickly realize why Apple doesn't set 4K capturing as the default.

The default 1080p setting will use approximately 200MB for every minute of video captured. On the other hand, 4K video eats up nearly double, at 375MB of storage for every minute you record. It's apparent, 4K video and 16GB iPhones are not going to get along at all.

Here's how to cancel your Apple Music subscription

Those who signed up for Apple Music on its June 30 launch day will need to make a decision by September 30: cancel your Apple Music subscription, or begin paying for the streaming music service.

For those who opt to cancel, you don't have to wait until the trial is over. You can disable auto-renew on your Apple Music subscription right now, effectively ending your access to the service after the trial expires.

Cancelling your subscription on an iOS device is straightforward, taking just a few minutes of your time and some knowledge of where to look. Thankfully, that's what we're here for.

      • Open the Music app and tap on your profile icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
      • Select View Apple ID.
      • Enter your account password when prompted.
      • Locate the Subscriptions category and tap on Manage.
      • Select the Apple Music Membership.
      • Tap on the switch next to Automatic Renewal.
      • Confirm you want to cancel by tapping on Turn off.
You can also cancel your membership using iTunes on a Windows or Mac computer.

      • Launch iTunes.
      • Along the top of the iTunes window you'll see your name; click on it.
      • Select Account info from the dropdown menu.
      • Enter your password when prompted.
      • Scroll down to the Settings section and click on Manage next to Subscriptions.
      • Click Edit next to Apple Music Subscription.
      • Confirm your selection.
You will still have access to Apple Music until your trial expires. The same applies should you cancel your subscription after having already paid for a month of service; you'll still have access until your paid-for month is over.
