iOS 9.2 Beta 1 Released for Testing on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Apple has released the first beta build of iOS 9.2 to users participating in the developer beta testing program. iOS 9.2 beta 1 arrives as build number 13C5055d and is available for all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices that are compatible with iOS 9.

Release notes accompanying the download suggest the update will focus on bug fixes with some minor new features and adjustments.

Those registered with the Apple Developer Program can find the release available to download now from the iOS Developer Center.

Presumably iOS 9.2 beta 1 will be released to users participating in the general public beta program as well. Any user can choose to join the public beta program by signing up to use pre-release software here on Apple.com, though it’s generally only recommended for advanced users as beta software tends to be buggier and less stable than a final release.

The most recent final version of system software for iPhones and iPads remains iOS 9.1.

Hands on with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

iphone 6s handson
“The only thing that’s changed is everything,” Apple said about the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus at Wednesday’s Apple event. That’s both true and untrue. The case looks pretty much the same, the screen sizes didn’t change, and the entry-level model still has a paltry 16GB of storage. But inside it’s an all-new iPhone with some impressive new capabilities.
I got hands-on time with the new models, and even though the presentation didn’t blow me away, the new 3D Touch and Live Photos features deliver a delightful experience.

Live Photos

“What is a picture?” pondered Phil Schiller on stage. After more than an hour and a half of keynote, this wasn’t a philosophical debate I was excited about having. But he had a point: A photo is a still image of a moment, but a moment can have a beginning, middle, and end that one frame can’t always fully represent. Enter Apple’s new Live Photo feature. It’s on by default in the main Camera app, and if you leave it on, it automatically captures 1.5 seconds, er, moments before and after your shutter press.
That sounds like a video, but Apple says it’s not a video. These are 12-megapixel photos captured by the rear iSight camera, and if you send them to a friend who’s using iOS 9 or El Capitan, an animation comes with. (And if you send them anywhere else, they arrive as plain JPEGs like usual.)
Flipping through the Live Photos in the Camera Roll, you’ll see a little glimpse of the animation—it’s just enough motion to let you distinguish a Live Photo from a standard one. When you press harder on a Live Photo (a maneuver Apple calls 3D Touch on the new iPhones), you’ll see the full three seconds of motion.
I have a 3-year-old, and a lot of my photos of him wind up blurry because at least some part of his body is in motion virtually all of the time—the boy is a walking wiggle. I don’t think you get to scrub through a Live Photo frame by frame and pick out the single still image that’s not blurry, but getting to see an animation of one of his wiggles would beat any blurry photo, or one where his eyes are closed.
Developers will get to use Live Photos too—Facebook is working on supporting Live Photos, aiming to finish by the end of this year. But even if they never leave the iPhone itself, Live Photos are just delightful. You can even use one as your lock screen wallpaper, and then 3D Touch it to make it move.

3D Touch

3D Touch, you ask? Yup, that’s the other big feature exclusive to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. It works just like Force Touch on the Apple Watch—you press harder, like you’re trying to push right through the screen, and that’s a different kind of touch than a regular swipe or tap. This will let you interact with apps (from Apple and third parties) in new ways.
For example, you can 3D Touch icons on the home screen for shortcuts to certain features: The Facebook icon hides shortcuts for changing your status or checking in, while the Camera app’s icon holds options for taking a selfie or shooting a new video. If you attempt to use 3D Touch on an icon that doesn’t support it (like Health), you’ll see the icon pop a little to let you know that the 3D Touch did in fact register, but nothing else is going to happen.
3D Touch gets even cooler once you open apps. You can use it to preview a new message in Mail, but it’s not quite as handy as Quick Look in OS X, because the preview disappears when you lift your finger back off the screen. During my hands-on time, I found myself 3D Touching a message, and then lifting my thumb to see what it says. But of course, the message preview vanishes, so I 3D Touch it again. And again, and again. It would be quicker to just tap the message to open it.
But the preview isn’t really for reading, it’s for quick triage. Apple calls the first preview the “peek,” and if you don’t lift your finger, you can swipe up, left, or down for options. Swipe right to mark the message as read—you’ll see a Mark As Read option as the preview slides to the right to remind you what will happen when you lift your finger.
Swipe left to delete the message. Swiping the message up produces buttons to reply, forward, flag, remind you about the message later, or move it elsewhere. Since you need to tap those buttons separately, the swipe-up move does fix the preview window in place.

iphone6splus 3dtouch mail moreSUSIE OCHS
Swipe the preview up for the rest of your options. Now you can lift your finger in order to tap one of these buttons—the preview will stay onscreen while you decide.

After the “peek,” if you continue to press hard, you’ll open the message, a move Apple calls the “pop.” If you peek and don’t pop, the message doesn’t get marked as read, so peeking in is a quick way to see if an email is the droid you’re looking for without having to go back and mark it as unread if it wasn’t.
3D Touch does tons of things in Messages, too: Hard-press a name for options to call, FaceTime, add to contacts, and so on. Hard-press URLs to peek at them, and again to pop into Safari. Hard-press street addresses to see them on a map, or dates to make a calendar appointment. This should prevent a lot of switching back and forth between apps when you’re making plans with groups of friends.

iphone 6s 3dtouch safariSUSIE OCHS
Safari’s Reading List will never be more than a 3D Touch away.

As with Live Photos, the 3D Touch feature is open to developers. For example, Facebook’s app icon has shortcuts to post a new status or check in right from your home screen. Instagram lets you 3D Touch everything, peeking into thumbnails and user profiles anywhere in the app. I asked if 3D Touch could be used to provide haptic feedback for an iPhone keyboard, and the rep didn’t think that was in the API just yet, but wasn’t totally sure. Still, even as it is today, I think 3D Touch has the potential to make Apple’s large-screened phones easier to navigate with one hand.
Early adopters of the Apple Watch had mixed feelings about Force Touch on that device. It’s unbelievably handy, but not exactly intuitive—there’s definitely a long learning curve before your brain remembers where to Force Touch and what you’ll find once you do, since every app can use it differently. In my short hands-on time with the iPhone, I had the same problems, but hopefully once the iPhone 6s is in my possession full-time, 3D Touch will quickly become second nature.

Camera and hardware

The iPhone’s rear iSight camera has been upgraded to 12 megapixels, and can shoot 4K video. The improved FaceTime camera on the front can take 5-megapixel stills. I didn’t get to fully test either in the demo room, of course, but the shutter speed is crazy fast, and zooming in on the demo photos on each device revealed tons of detail. Panoramas are up to 63 megapixels now, and I love how their dedicated album in iOS 9 shows you the whole panorama in each thumbnail.
Besides the new cameras, though, the hardware is nearly the same. The second-generation Touch ID home button works faster, according to Apple, so we’ll do some side-by-side tests when we get our iPhone 6s review unit. The new rose gold color is really nice in person, and Apple was smart to release it alongside a rose gold-colored aluminum Apple Watch Sport, so you can match colors without having to mortgage your home for a rose gold Apple Watch Edition.

iphone6s rose goldAPPLE
Rose gold is really pretty.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are ever-so-slightly thicker than the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but only by two-tenths of a millimeter, so definitely not noticeable when you’re holding them. Cases for the new phones should fit the old phones, and cases for the old phones should fit the new ones, depending on their design and materials. All the buttons and ports are in the same place, and so is the camera.
Preorders start September 12, with the phones launching in the U.S. and 11 other countries starting September 25. We’ll have a full review up as soon as we can—post your questions in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer them!

This Australian could be the first to get a new iPhone 6S

iPhone 6S

One Australian man is camping in front of Sydney’s flagship Apple store in the hopes of being the first person in the world to get his hands on the new iPhone — and it hasn’t even been announced yet.

On Tuesday morning, entrepreneur and technology journalist Lindsay Handmer staked his claim to a patch of cement outside the downtown store, first spotted by Australian CNET reporter Seamus Byrne, and has spent one night in his tent so far. Australia is often the first country to get Apple products, thanks to the international date line.

SEE ALSO: iPhone 6s to have ‘3D Touch’ three-level, next-gen Force Touch interface

The stunt is intended to promote his online secondhand technology marketplace, mysparetech.com, which also launched Tuesday. While sleeping rough, Handmer will be fundraising for Mission Australia, a service that helps the homeless. If he can manage to buy the first new iPhone, he’s also going to auction it off for the charity.

Starting a sales website requires a critical mass of people, and he thought camping out at Apple would be a good way to generate some publicity. “I thought I was really original … and then I googled it, and people have done it in every [Apple] line for the past few years,” he laughed.

Handmer could be living on the streets of Sydney for weeks, although he hopes the new smartphone will go on sale around Sept. 18. “Apple has done things in the exact same way over the past few years. I suspect that it’s going to be the same,” he said. “I’m here until they try and get rid of me or until I buy the first phone.”

So, what are his predictions for the Apple announcement that should come Sept. 10 at around 3 a.m. AEST? “An iPhone 6S and 6S Plus would be my guess,” he said. “There’s the Force Touch screen that seems to be the big thing, upgraded camera, and a bunch of little improvements. The S series phone always seems to be the one where they make improvements.”

It could be a tough wait until he finds out first hand. While it’s sunny in Sydney this week, it’s also quite chilly. “I’ve had a few regrets along the way. It’s an up and down process. I’ve only been here 24 hours now,” he said.

He’s not 100% sure if it’s legal to sleep here or not. Last night, a police car pulled in as he was setting up his tent. Two policemen got out, but they went into McDonald’s and didn’t give him a second glance.

For now, it’s just him out there. Once there’s more of a line, Handmer has some ideas for how to pass the time — he’s got some flashing party lights, and maybe they’ll get some music going.

He’s also been using the website Airtasker to outsource a few important jobs. Someone is coming by at 9 a.m. AEST to mind his spot while he gets some breakfast. A 24-hour McDonald’s with a bathroom is conveniently close to the Apple Store, and there are a couple of gyms around where he can take a shower. His fiancĂ©e is also going to come join him on the weekend.

Handmer’s met some interesting people so far, but he didn’t factor in that the Apple Store is right next to a busy bus stop. Still, he thinks he got eight hours sleep last night, despite the fact that Apple’s lights make it seem like the middle of the day in his tent. At about 11 a.m. AEST, the sun pokes through the skyscrapers, he said, so he’s going to recline his chair and take a nap.

The Apple Store staff are a bit disappointed though, because Handmer actually has a Dell computer and an HTC smartphone with him at the campsite. “I think Apple make great products, but I guess I like the more technical stuff. Android, for those types of things.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against people buying Apple products, I just prefer something different,” he said. “I just tend to opt for the more affordable side of stuff.”

iPhone 6s to have ‘3D Touch’ three-level, next-gen Force Touch interface

iPhone 6s
One of the cornerstone features of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, to be announced next Wednesday, is a screen based on the Force Touch technology from the latest MacBook trackpads and the Apple Watch. However, as we noted in previous articles such as our event expectations roundup from yesterday, the Force Touch feature in the new iPhones will actually be a next-generation version of the technology. According to sources familiar with the new iPhones, the new pressure-sensitive screen will likely be called the “3D Touch Display”

While the MacBook trackpads and Apple Watch act on two levels of pressure, the differentiation between a tap and a press, the new iPhones will actually differentiate and unique act upon three levels of pressure: a tap, a press, and a deeper press, according to sources. The 3D Touch name is therefore derived from the new Force Touch sensor’s ability to sense three dimensions of pressure, rather than just two. This opens up the door to new user-interface tricks, such as shortcut gestures across the iPhone 6s version of iOS 9.

In an article profiling the new Force Touch feature earlier this year, we shared a few additional examples of how the new iPhone will take advantage of the new screen technology:
New to the Force Touch experience, a user can look up a point of interest in the Maps application, and then Force Touch on the destination to immediately begin turn-by-turn directions. Currently, if a user wants to start navigating to a destination, she must search for the point of interest, click the navigation logo on the map view, then click another button to actually start navigating. In this case, the Force Touch gesture will skip two steps.
In the Music application, a user can Force Touch on a listed track to be presented with some of the most commonly used actions. For instance, if a user deep presses on the listing for a song, a menu will appear to quickly add the song to a playlist or save it for offline listening. This Force Touch gesture would act as a substitute for clicking the actions button on the right side of each track listing in the Music app.
Another feature in testing, according to one source, are shortcuts that appear after Force Touching an app icon on the Home screen. For example, if a user deep presses on the Phone app icon, he could choose to shortcut directly to the Voicemail tab. This could also apply to deep pressing the News app icon and being taken directly to either the Favorites or For You tabs.
Some of the Force Touch gestures will come from Apple’s latest MacBooks. For instance, a user can Force Touch a link in Safari to see a preview of that webpage. The gesture also works for deep pressing on an address or contact name to see a preview of a map view or contact card, respectively. Similarly, a user can Force Touch a word to look up its definition.

With three dimensions, developers will likely be able to create new types of games that take advantage of the new technology. The updated Force Touch screen is also set to make its way to the iPad Pro, where it will be leveraged by a non-traditional-looking stylus accessory. The iPad Pro will be announced on Wednesday as well, according to sources.

The new 3D Touch screen is likely to work in tandem with a new Taptic Engine to provide physical feedback to the user. Check out our full roundup of what else to expect from the new iPhones, including support for a new 12 megapixel camera with 4K video recording capabilities, an upgraded FaceTime camera, faster chips, animated wallpapers, and a new Rose Gold color option.

With iOS 9, Apple Maps will deserve another look

map on iOS 9
Apple Maps. Just typing the words can drive fear into the heart of any iOS lover.
OK, that might be a little extreme, but for the many users who were burned by Apple Maps with its introduction alongside iOS 6 back in 2012, the app doesn’t exactly bring up fond memories.
Apple Maps has improved a lot over the years. At WWDC in June, Apple made a point to note that its mapping app (which is installed by default) is used 3.5 times more than its closest competitor. That competitor, of course, would be Google Maps.
For a lot of users, Google Maps has become the preferred mapping app because it has features that Apple Maps just doesn’t. For instance, transit directions.
The original iOS Maps app (which was powered by Google Maps) had transit directions and this was a great way for users to get from place to place and plan routes, especially in cities like New York, where transit is incredibly important.
Although Apple allowed Apple Maps to link to third-party apps (including Google Maps) for transit directions, the lack of any native solution has held the app back.
In my personal life, I’ve switched from using Apple Maps to using Google Maps and CityMapper almost all the time.
But with iOS 9 coming soon, Apple is giving Maps new attention. Building off of some acquisitions (which include mapping services Embark and HopStop) and lots of additional TLC, it’s time to give Apple Maps another look.
Apple has added transit support to the last few public betas for iOS 9. Running the beta software on my iPhone, I decided to give the new transit-enabled Apple Maps a try in New York City to see if it could get me from place to place. More to the point, I want to know; Can it replace Google Maps?

Better place information and faster Handoff

Aside from transit, one of the big areas Apple has focused on improving in Maps is its database of place information. Before, Yelp data and photos were pulled into a location’s card but now — depending on the location — information from Booking.com and Trip Advisor are available, too.
You can also see if a location accepts Apple Pay directly from the app.
better place information for Map
Apple Maps is also designed to work faster with Handoff and Continuity, features between iOS and OS X devices. If you start looking at a route or a place on the iPad and switch to the iPhone, Handoff will now take you exactly where you were before in the map.
This will really come in handy when OS X El Capitan launches later this fall. Like iOS 9, Apple Maps in El Capitan will support better place data as well as transit information.
map on iOS 9
While Apple Maps now replicates more of the features of Google Maps and CityMapper, the experience is different.
The subway routes are accurate and Apple Maps even has information to show the best subway entrance for your destination — as well as flyover information on the map itself that shows exactly where you are.
In New York City, Apple Maps uses the MTA’s API to provide real-time transit information for a number of lines. This can sometimes alter what route you need to take.
Delays and incidents are also fed in from the MTA and are viewable inside the app. This is great because it makes it easy to decide, say, whether you should take the Q or if the N/R is going to be better.
The experience is similar to Google Maps, where you can route to a destination with an “arrive by” time to let you know when you need to leave. In iOS 9, you’ll get reminders on your phone of when you need to leave if an appointment in you calendar has address location information. Apple Watch owners will also get notified on their wrist.
iOS 9 map
I was impressed with the transit access in iOS 9. It worked almost identically to Google Maps. One nice part of Google Maps is that I can also call an Uber from within the app. I’d like to see Apple Maps add support for car services, too.
Offline usage for transit directions and Apple Maps in general is still limited. To me, this feels like one of the biggest areas to improve. Living in a city where I’m often underground when I need information about my route, it’s great that I can see general directions and routes within Apple Maps — but I worry that if I load another app or go do something else, it’ll all disappear from the cache.
Google Maps is better about this — especially if you enable offline mode — and third-party transit apps are even more adept at getting stuff done.
Having better offline support would also be a win for using the iPad out and about because the iPad is truly great as a navigation tool. I have an LTE iPad, but lots of people don’t. Having the ability to load a map before I leave with some landmarks and a trip plan could be excellent for tourists.

Not a replacement for a solid transit app

Although the service worked well for me in New York City — I didn’t get on a wrong train or bad directions – Apple Maps still isn’t a bonafide replacement for something like CityMapper.
CityMapper will let me look at schedules for lots of lines at a glance whether I’m at the station or not. With Apple Maps, I can see the upcoming trains at various stations, too. That’s great for trains, but I’d like to know real-time information for buses, too.
Likewise, I sometimes like to look at various timetables at random stations while I’m at another station and to try to see if I can get a better route.
I don’t expect Apple Maps to be better than a stand-alone transit app. The best-case scenario would be that it’s as good as Google Maps — or as good as OG Apple Maps. And from that perspective, it’s getting awfully close.
Still, for transit diehards, a third-party app isn’t a bad idea. That said, I’m extremely relieved Apple Maps is finally back in the public-transit game.

Worth trying again

Here’s the bottom line: If you were burned by Apple Maps three years ago, it’s time to give it another shot. It’s not so much Apple Maps is inherently anybetter at mapping than Google Maps, because I’m just not sure that’s true. What is true, however, is that Apple Maps is much more tightly integrated into the core iOS experience.
If you add a destination on your calendar, you can get directions in a flash. (My favorite calendar app, Fantastical, lets you configure it to work with Google Maps on both iOS and OS X, but that’s the exception, not the rule)
Third-party apps that pull in mapping information also use Apple Maps by default unless they are also specifically coded to include third-party apps (again, Fantastical fits into this category). Siri uses Apple Maps, too. And let’s not forget about CarPlay.
All of this is to say it’s better for Apple users when Apple Maps is a better experience. After using it in earnest for a week, I can say Apple Maps is certainly better than what it was prior to iOS 9. It’s good even — especially on the iPad — for trip planning.
With the addition of transit directions, it’s really worth another shot.
The new version of Apple Maps will be released alongside iOS 9 this month.

Apple said to be exploring making its own movies and TV shows

Apple may soon find itself playing the role of producer of original video programming, according to a new report.
The Cupertino tech giant has held meetings with Hollywood executives in recent weeks to gauge their interest in helping make original movies and TV shows, producing content that would challenge offerings from Netflix and Amazon Prime, Variety reports. The Apple unit reportedly handling the discussions reports to Eddy Cue, Apple's head of Internet software and services.
The company hopes to begin the hiring process soon for development and production divisions that would begin creating long-form content by next year.

The report emerges a little more than a week before an event in San Francisco next week in which the company is expected to show off new iPhones as well as a
new Apple TV box that it potentially will launch alongside an Internet-delivered television service. The company was believed to be readying those products for its annual developers conference in June, butinstead they were pushed back.Apple representatives did not respond to a request for comment.
Original movies and TV shows would be a valuable component in a Web-based subscription TV service Apple is said to have been working on. The service would offer programming from about 25 channels, including major networks ABC, CBS and Fox, that would be available on all devices running Apple's iOS operating system, including the Apple TV, according to the report. (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET.)
The service, which was expected to be announced in June, would deliver programming across the Internet, like Dish's Sling TV product and Sony's PlayStation Vue. A series of "over-the-top" TV services have hit the Web in recent months, as the TV industry as networks and TV providers have recognized the long-term importance of appealing to a "cord cutter" -- someone who forsakes a traditional pay-TV for Internet-based video.

How to downgrade iOS 8.4.1 to iOS 8.4

Apple released iOS 8.4.1 on Aug 13, 2015, which includes several bug fixes and improvements for Apple Music.
If you upgraded your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 8.4.1 accidentally or want to jailbreak your device, or found your phone frozen sometime, then the good news is that you can downgrade your device to iOS 8.4 as Apple seems to be still signing the iOS 8.4 firmware file. However, you will need to hurry up as Apple could stop signing any moment.
Important points
  • You will be able to downgrade back only to iOS 8.4.
  • You will be able to downgrade as long as Apple continues to sign iOS 8.4 firmware file.
  • It is important to take a backup of your iOS device to iCloud or using SynciOS iOS Backup Tool so you can restore from the backup if something goes wrong.
  • Apple doesn’t recommend downgrading so please proceed at your own risk.

  • In the next screen, it will give you information about the iOS 8.4 update. Click on the Next button, followed by the Agree button to continue.
  •  iTunes will now download the iOS 8.4 software and install it on your device. It should take around 10 minutes.
  • After it is successfully restored to iOS 8.4, you should see the white ‘Helo’ screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your device, and restore your device from the backup to restore your personal data.
Method 2:
  • Turn off Find my iPhone via the Settings app (Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone).
  • Download the iOS 8.4 firmware file for your device. The iOS 8.4 firmware file for iPhone 6 Plus, model number A1524 (which can be found at the back of your device) is iPhone7,1_8.4_12H143_Restore.ipsw. Accordingly, download the appropriate firmware file from our iOS firmware file download page for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
  • Connect the device running iOS 8.4.1 to your computer.
  • Launch iTunes and select the iOS device from the top right corner, to the left of the iTunes Store button.
  • Hold the Alt/Option key on the Mac or Shift Key in Windows on your keyboard and click on the Check for Update option, instead of restoring. Important note: We were able to successfully downgrade from iOS 8.4.1 to iOS 8.4 using this step, but if you want to go by the book then you should use the Restore method, but it will be more time-consuming. If you use the Restore method, then it will wipe the data from your device so please don’t forget to take a backup.
  • Select the ipsw file you had downloaded earlier.
  • iTunes will inform that it will update your iOS device to iOS 8.4 and will verify the update with Apple.
  • Click Update.
  • iTunes should now downgrade your iOS device to iOS 8.4.
  • After downgrading, the iOS device will restart. You should then see “Slide to upgrade”. Enter the passcode, and then wait for the downgrade process to complete. You may be prompted to activate your device.

To find out if Apple is still signing the firmware file, check this website. Green rows with a tick means that Apple is still signing the firmware file, and you can downgrade from iOS 8.4.1 to iOS 8.4.
If Apple is still signing iOS 8.4, please follow these simple instructions to downgrade to iOS 8.4 from iOS 8.4.1:
This method is recommended, but it is more time-consuming as it involves restoring data from backup.
downgrade iPhone
restore iphone
restore from itunes
That’s it. Your iPhone or iPad should now be successfully downgraded to iOS 8.4.
This method is much faster, and a method we’ve used successfully several times, but it would be important to highlight that it is not the recommended method.
That’s it. Your device should now be successfully downgraded to iOS 8.4.
Please note that Apple can stop signing iOS 8.4 firmware files any moment. You won’t be able to downgrade back to 8.4 once Apple stops signing the firmware file. So downgrade back to iOS 8.4 as soon as possible.
