Report: Apple’s annual iPhone event to be held in early September

wwdc 2015

We’re right in the middle of new iPhone rumor season, and today’s is a big one. Apple is said to be announcing its next iPhones — likely the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus early in the second week of September, according to Buzzfeed’s reliable John Paczkowski.
The report, citing anonymous sources close to Apple, said the event would take place the week of Sept. 7 and pinned it down to Sept. 9. However, Mashable has observed that Apple typically holds its iPhone events on Tuesdays, making it likely that the event is actually on Sept. 8.
If you follow Apple’s established pattern, you can take an educated guess at what some other important dates might be. The company’s next-gen mobile operating system, iOS 9, may debut the following Wednesday, on the 16th. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus may launch two days later, which would be Friday the 18th.
Apple is on an “S” year with its iPhones. That means they’re likely to maintain the same overall design, but pack upgraded internals. The company is expected to add Force Touch pressure sensitive touch screens, bump the camera resolution up to 12MP from 8MP and adopt a more durable type of aluminum currently used in the Apple Watch Sport.
The event won’t be limited to iPhones, if the report is to be believed. A new, slimmer and faster AppleTV may make its debut at the same event. A previous report indicated the upgraded television streaming box would include a speedy A8 chip, a new remote with built-in touch pad, Siri integration and, most importantly, an app store to draw new content from.
Apple may choose to unveil the long-rumored iPad Pro — a larger iPad with a 12.9-inch screen aimed at business and education industries — but new iPads are typically announced at a separate event in October.

Apple's third iOS 9 public beta brings gorgeous new wallpapers

Apple has released the third version of iOS 9 to the public, as it continues to tweak its upcoming software update to iOS devices.
While iOS 9 packs a host of new features, like transit directions in maps, the update is focused on delivering a smoother, faster experience on Apple's mobile devices. But the new wallpapers stand as the most notable addition to this slightly improved pre-release version of Apple's upcoming software update.
And they're flat-out gorgeous. One of them even depicts Jupiter as one of its moons fly by.

This beta update brought a number of other small changes and improvements. Mashable noticed the operating system is running much more smoothly. The new News app, for example, loads more quickly and no longer crashes abruptly. We've started noticing large, prominent ads while scrolling the "For You" section, as well as suggestions for what other news you might like.
There are now regulatory notices under "General" in the Settings app. The shift and delete keys on the default keyboard seem to have a stronger outline and the shuffle songs symbol is now more prominently featured in the Music app.
It's not all good though. An odd but innocuous bug is leaving the last slot under "suggested apps" empty, as you can see below.

As always, make a backup of your device before installing. It's getting smoother, but it's still a beta, so you never know what might happen if something goes wrong.
iOS 9 is a much bigger release for the iPad than for the iPhone. If you have an the iPad Air 2, you'll be able to use two apps side-by-side, a first on iOS. Another feature coming to all iPads lets you slide one app in from the side for quick access. Both iPhone and iPad will gain a smarter Siri able to take actions based on context, more battery life, and a revamped Notes app where you can sketch, and save documents and websites.
iOS 9 will launch in the fall, and will be compatible with the iPhone 4S and up, and the iPad 2 and up. You can also get it on the fifth and sixth generation iPod touches.

How to change notification order on iOS 9

iOS device

Organizing and viewing push notifications on an iOS device was made easier when Apple incorporated Notification Center as we know it with iOS 7.
A quick swipe from the top of your iOS device’s screen reveals a list of notifications, waiting for you to take action or presenting you with information. Try as you might to make sense of the order in which the notifications are presented, it’s always been a bit of a mystery.
With iOS 9, Apple has made it really simple to manage the order of notifications in Notification Center.

You can now set notifications to be placed in single list, in the order in which they arrived, regardless of the app they came from. Or you can manually place apps in a list, indicating the order of notifications and grouping by app.
  • Launch the iOS Settings app.
  • Tap on Notifications.
  • Select Sort Order.
Recent will group notifications in a unified list, while Group will let you manually define the order (based on app) of notifications displayed on your device.
Of course, Apple still included a switch to group notifications by app should you select the Recent sorting option.

Get to know the new app switcher on iOS 9

The first time you double-click the home button after updating to iOS 9, you’re in for a surprise.
Just two years after Apple revamped the app switching interface with iOS 7, it’s changing it again. Instead of providing thumbnails of apps placed next to one another, Apple has opted to place the same thumbnails in a stack.

Double-click the home button on your iOS device to view the new interface. In the past, you would scroll from right-to-left to view previously opened apps. With iOS 9, however, the scroll direction has been reversed, requiring a gesture from left to right allowing you to scroll through apps.
Gone are profile icons of your favorite and recent contacts, which were placed above the app thumbnails in iOS 7 and iOS 8. You now access those by opening the new search interface from the home screen of your iOS device.
To force-close an app you still swipe up on the card, tossing it off into the digital void. You can also swipe multiple cards at the same time, using multiple fingers.

Another aspect of the new app switcher you’ll likely notice is a change in how Handoff works. Handoff allows you to quickly open an email, message, or Safari page (just to name a few) on another Apple device without having to email it to yourself. With iOS 9, Handoff is available in the app switcher along the bottom of the screen.
When your iOS device detects content open on another Apple device that’s Handoff-compatible, the small bar will show up. You can either tap or slide the bar up to the top of the screen, opening the respective app.

Apple denies report it's getting into wireless business

Apple on Tuesday shot down a report that it's in talks to introduce its own wireless network in the US and Europe.
Business Insider, citing unnamed sources, on Monday reported that Apple was working on a mobile network similar to Google's Project Fi. The publication said Apple's wireless service would allow customers to pay the company directly for data, calls and texts, while automatically switching between carriers to give users the best service. Business Insider said it would be at least five years before Apple's service would launch.
But Apple on Tuesday said it hasn't explored a wireless service.
The initial report from Business Insider said Apple was privately testing a mobile virtual network operator service, or MVNO, in the US. An MVNO is a wireless service provided by a company that doesn't own the network infrastructure that powers the service. Family Talk Wireless, Freedom Pop and Republic Wireless are examples of companies that rent wireless service from network providers -- like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint -- and then provide the service to their own customers.
The newest MVNO came from Apple rival Google. The Internet giant earlier this year unveiled a wireless service -- called Project Fi -- that switches between cellular and Wi-Fi signals and lets customers pay for only what data they use.
Typically, smartphone owners pay wireless carriers like AT&T and Verizon a bulk rate for a certain amount of data.

How to block a phone number on your Android phone

Banish those telemarketers, or anybody else who gets annoying, from calling you for good by following a few steps.
After about the twentieth time that telemarketer bugs you with an “incredible deal” you’re probably ready to throw your phone out the window.
There’s a better way. With just a few steps you can banish that caller from contacting you forever. Here’s how to do it.
As a caveat, your specific dialer may look different or have some of the options placed elsewhere depending on which device you have. By and large, however, the process is pretty similar.
If it’s someone who called you recently, go to the dialer and then touch the three-dot menu button. Then touch Select.
block phone number on Android phone
Choose the offending caller and and then again touch the menu, this time choosing Add to Auto reject list. Now your phone should automatically block the number when they call again.
You can also block a caller by heading to the contacts app and making the same selection from the drop-down menu.
If you change your mind, find that same number again and choose Remove from Auto reject list. Though if you do that, get ready for more fantastic offers you’ll want to refuse.
