How to turn off (or turn on) landscape mode on the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus home screen

With the iPhone 6 Plus and the new 6s Plus, you have the ability to use the home screen in landscape mode (with the iPhone held horizontally) or in portrait mode (the iPhone held vertically).

Given the preponderance of vertically-shot videos, you may not want the home screen to switch when your iPhone is in a horizontal position. Sure, it’ll move to a vertical position when you move your phone, but maybe you have your reasons for wanting the home screen to not switch at all. (Because annoying).

Or maybe you’re like me and you want the home screen to switch between landscape and portrait, but it seems stuck on portrait. It won’t switch anymore.

(To help you decide: Some Apple apps, like Contacts and Mail, display a two-pane interface when in landscape mode. Other apps, like Music and Activty, seem to work only in portait mode.)

You can use the orientation lock in Control Center (swipe up from the bottom of the screen), but there's another way to do it. It’s actually not an intuitive setting to adjust, so don’t feel bad if you haven’t figured it out on your own. Also, if you want to turn off landscape switching, know that it comes with a compromise, as you’ll learn about in the steps below.

Turn on/off landscape switching
1. Tap the Settings app.
2. Tap Display & Brightness.
3. In the list of settings, look for Display Zoom. Under that heading, you should see View. Tap it.

4. You will find two tabs to select:
  • If you select Standard, this will allow your home screen to switch between landscape and portrait modes. If this is want you want, tap Standard.
  • If you select Zoomed, this will turn off landscape switching, but everything on your iPhone Plus screen will appear just a bit bigger. If you’re OK with that, tap Zoomed.

    5. Tap Set in the upper right. Your iPhone Plus will restart to implement the changes.

iOS 9 Battery Life Problems? Draining too Fast? Here’s the Solution

Though updating to iOS 9 has gone well for most users, some iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners have discovered their battery is draining faster than usual, and now iOS 9 has given them a reduced battery life. That’s rather frustrating if it impacts you, but much like how iOS 9 slows down some devices but not others, the battery life issue is not a universal experience.

Fortunately, there are some universal solutions to battery draining problems, so if you’ve discovered battery life has reduced after updating to iOS 9, read on to help resolve the issue.

1: Wait! If you just updated to iOS 9…

Keep in mind that if you just updated to iOS 9 (or any other iOS) and have existing data on your device, then iOS features like Spotlight must complete indexing of the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to many hours, depending on how much stuff you have on your device, and how often you use it, so if you have just updated to iOS 9 moments ago and have discovered the battery life is draining inordinately fast, consider just letting it sit for a while and seeing if the battery drain resolves itself. Sometimes it does, if a day passes and it’s still in bad shape, then you can start making adjustments.

    2: Turn Down Screen Brightness

One of the single biggest adjustments you can make to improve battery life of any iPhone or iPad is to reduce the screen brightness. The easiest way to do this is through the Control Center:
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up Control Center, then adjust the brightness slider towards the left – the less bright the screen is, the longer the battery will last

This makes a very noticeable difference, so don’t discount it. The lower the screen brightness, the better the battery will be, but obviously you’ll need to find a happy medium so that you can use and read your screen without it being a total battery hog.

3: Disable Location Services You Don’t Need or Use

Using location services and GPS is heavy on the battery, thus reducing app usage of those features can improve battery life:
Open Settings, go to Privacy, choose Location Services, and adjust each app to the settings appropriate for how you use them – setting to “Never” or “While Using” as needed

You can also turn off ALL location services but that is strongly not recommended, as apps like Weather, Maps, and Siri all rely on obtaining your location data to work properly. If you deny all location functionality, you’ll lose many features on device, so it’s better to be specific about what to disable and what to leave on.

    4: Ditch Background App Activity

Background App Refresh is a well intentioned feature, but in practice it often slows down devices and causes unnecessary battery drain by generating activity in applications that aren’t actively in use. It’s a matter of opinion, but personally I turn this feature off on every iOS device I own, I’d rather have improved battery life and performance than some apps doing stuff in the background.
Open Settings and go to to “General”, choose “Background App Refresh” and turn the top switch to the OFF position to disable the feature

Most users don’t notice any difference with having this turned off in terms of how apps function, but users do tend to notice a speed increase and an improvement to battery life.

    5: Reboot

Finally, sometimes after it has been a while after an update, a hard reboot can often resolve strange issues ranging from weird behavior to minor issues with battery life caused by some errant process.

The simplest way to force a reboot is to hold down the Home button and Power button until the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch restarts itself, as demonstrated by the  Apple logo appearing on screen. The device will boot itself back up to the home screen, ready to be used again.

Those are some of the better general changes you can make to improve battery life in general, but iOS 9 also has improved battery handling features which help you drill down what exactly is eating battery life. Accessible from the Settings app > Battery section, this can be a helpful tool to reveal what is eating battery and why. In the same battery section is also the new Low Power Mode button, and while it undoubtedly improves battery to have that enabled, leaving it on all the time is not really practical as it reduces power consumption, device power, and disables a lot of features you may want to keep using.

Finally, keep in mind you can always downgrade iOS 9 to iOS 8.4.1, though the window of opportunity for that is likely closing soon, which means you’d be stuck on iOS 9 or iOS 9.1.

Have you noticed battery life draining in iOS 9 on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? Maybe your battery life is better with iOS 9 too? Let us know in the comments, and if you have any tricks or tips, share those too!

How to record 4K video on iPhone 6S, 6S Plus

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are both capable of recording 4K high-definition video, though you wouldn't know it just by launching the camera app.

By default, the iOS camera app on the new devices is set to record video at 1080p at 60 frames per second. Should you own a 4K-equipped TV, making it possible to full appreciate the video you capture with your new iPhone, or simply want to future-proof your videos, you'll need to enable 4K by following the steps below.

    • Launch the Settings app.
    • Tap on Photos & Camera.
    • Under the Camera section, tap on Record Video.
    • Tap on 4K at 30 fps.

Once you look at the chart just below the different settings, you'll quickly realize why Apple doesn't set 4K capturing as the default.

The default 1080p setting will use approximately 200MB for every minute of video captured. On the other hand, 4K video eats up nearly double, at 375MB of storage for every minute you record. It's apparent, 4K video and 16GB iPhones are not going to get along at all.

Here's how to cancel your Apple Music subscription

Those who signed up for Apple Music on its June 30 launch day will need to make a decision by September 30: cancel your Apple Music subscription, or begin paying for the streaming music service.

For those who opt to cancel, you don't have to wait until the trial is over. You can disable auto-renew on your Apple Music subscription right now, effectively ending your access to the service after the trial expires.

Cancelling your subscription on an iOS device is straightforward, taking just a few minutes of your time and some knowledge of where to look. Thankfully, that's what we're here for.

      • Open the Music app and tap on your profile icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
      • Select View Apple ID.
      • Enter your account password when prompted.
      • Locate the Subscriptions category and tap on Manage.
      • Select the Apple Music Membership.
      • Tap on the switch next to Automatic Renewal.
      • Confirm you want to cancel by tapping on Turn off.
You can also cancel your membership using iTunes on a Windows or Mac computer.

      • Launch iTunes.
      • Along the top of the iTunes window you'll see your name; click on it.
      • Select Account info from the dropdown menu.
      • Enter your password when prompted.
      • Scroll down to the Settings section and click on Manage next to Subscriptions.
      • Click Edit next to Apple Music Subscription.
      • Confirm your selection.
You will still have access to Apple Music until your trial expires. The same applies should you cancel your subscription after having already paid for a month of service; you'll still have access until your paid-for month is over.

Everything you need to know about App Store malware

The App Store is not as safe as we thought.

While Apple's notoriously restrictive approach to apps has typically been thought to make malicious software on the platform next to impossible, security researchers recently identified dozens of apps containing malware in the App Store.

The malware, called XcodeGhost, was first publicized by security researchers at Palo Alto Networks, who discovered the infected apps. The exploit puts quite a bit of personal and device information at risk, including your Apple ID and iCloud password, the contents of your device's clipboard and your device’s name, type and UUID (universally unique identifier).

The malware stems from a modified version of Xcode — that's the set of software tools Apple provides to developers to create iOS apps — that contained malware. Though this was not the official version of Xcode provided by Apple (more on that later), the infected apps managed to make their way through Apple's review process and into the App Store.
      How bad is it?

While Palo Alto Networks' Ryan Olson told Reuters they hadn't found evidence the malware had been used to steal user information, the exploit is far reaching.

It's hard to say exactly how many apps have been infected. Initially, Palo Alto Networks identified two infected apps but later increased that number to 39. The list included some of the most popular apps in China like WeChat, Angry Birds 2 (Rovio has said only the Chinese version was affected), Didi Chuxing (a Chinese ride hailing apps), Railway 12306 (the country's official app for buying train tickets) and China Unicorn Mobile Office (made by one of the most popular carriers), according to the firm.

But though nearly all of the infected apps comes from Chinese developers,
the the infected apps are not limited to the Chinese App Store. Some apps like WeChat, SaveSnap and Camcard are also available — and widely used — in the U.S App Store.

The reality is the actual list of infected apps could be much higher. Tencent, the company behind WeChat, said in a reportSunday that it has identified 76 infected apps while China's state-run broadcaster said the number could be as high as 350, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
      How did this even happen?

The short answer is bad luck and developer laziness. It appears developers inadvertently infected their own apps when they downloaded a modified version of Xcode that included the malware. Xcode is large program that often takes a long time to download, Palo Alto Networks explained in a statement, which sometimes leads developers to turn to sources other than Apple.

In China (and in other places around the world), sometimes network speeds are very slow when downloading large files from Apple’s servers. As the standard Xcode installer is nearly 3GB, some Chinese developers choose to download the package from other sources or get copies from colleagues.

The security firm goes on to explain that when you search for "Xcode download" on Google, it returned results for several forums frequented by developers. Many of these download links direct back to files posted on the file sharing site Baidu Yunpan, which contained the infected versions of Xcode that app makers unwittingly downloaded.
      What should I do now?

Given the popularity of some of the apps involved, hundreds of millions of users are thought to be affected by the exploit. And it's still possible there are infected apps that have not yet been discovered. Apple says it has removed the infected apps, though some of those identified by Palo Alto Networks remain in the App Store and have yet to be updated. Apple did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment on this.

If you have one of the infected apps (you can find a list here) you should delete it immediately (note that Tencent has already updated WeChat with a fix, so make sure you have the latest update, version 6.2.6.)

It's also a good idea to change your iCloud password now, especially if you downloaded one of the apps in question. While you're at it, you should consider turning on two-factor authenticationas well. That way, even if your Apple ID and password is compromised, an attacker will not be able to get into your account from another device.

It should go without saying, but, if you're a developer, do not download Xcode from sources other than Apple. And if you have in the past, now would be the time to get the official version from Apple.

Why you'll want to install that new iPhone operating system ASAP: Protection from hackers

Updating your iPhone is like doing your taxes. You just gotta get it done.

On Wednesday, Apple released iOS 9, the latest version of the code that powers iPhones and iPads. It has new features like better battery life, advanced search functions and enhanced transit information in its Maps app.

The reason to update, however, is two key security improvements: stronger pass codes and additional security for logging in. As an enticement, it works with any iPhone or iPad made in the last three years. And it's free.

Apple's users should jump at the opportunity. Like desktops and laptops, smartphones are vulnerable to all sorts of hacks. Nearly all devices powered by Google's Android software, for example, could be taken over by hackers who send a simple text message.

Still, just 11 percent of Apple's users downloaded iOS 9 the first day it was available.

The low number is a harsh reminder of how annoying software updates can be. They're often buggy, sometimes wrecking key functions like cellular connectivity and email reliability. Customers are already complaining that iOS 9 is causing their apps to crash. It's as annoying as paying Uncle Sam every April.
The road that shouldn't be taken

But choosing not to upgrade leaves you vulnerable. Hackers often examine updates to figure out what's wrong with older versions of the software, and then take advantage of users who haven't upgraded. The result is that important data on phones -- banking information, photos, fantasy football lineups -- is left open for pilfering. Hackers could even turn on the microphone and listen in on you.

So far, we've been lucky. There haven't been any major hacks involving smartphones, but security researchers say we should still be diligent.

Consider the recent discovery of the Stagefright flaw by mobile-security company Zimperium. The flaw, which a researcher found in the software that powers Android smartphones, would let hackers insert malicious programs through a text message. Nearly all the billion Android-powered smartphones sold in the last year could be vulnerable, and it's hard to tell how many will ever receive a fix.

It's not just Google devices; Apple's iPhones have also had flaws. For instance, an update Apple sent in August fixed among other things six flaws in the system that displays Web content on all browsers in an iPhone or iPad.

Like all security flaws, these holes don't turn into a problem until a hacker writes malicious code that can take advantage of them. But there's a vast amount of these malicious files, called exploits, that security experts don't know about.

"It is unquestionable beyond any shadow of a doubt that running the latest and greatest of anything is what you should be doing," said Christopher Budd, who specializes in communicating about cybersecurity threats for security-software maker Trend Micro.

Installing a software update is more appealing now, isn't it?

Sure, hackers generally have a much easier time on your Web-connected computer, where they can get your trusty laptop to silently download malicious software without even telling you.

That's why the discovery of the Stagefright flaw in Android phones in July was so scary. If more flaws like that appear in smartphones, hackers will have a much easier time sneaking into your phone.

Security experts like Jon Marler, who helps make cybersecurity products at Trustwave, have yet to witness a major smartphone attack. That's not to say it couldn't happen; the flaws are there to abuse, he said, hackers just don't think they're yet worth the effort.

"As there are more and more mobile devices," Marler said, "I think that will change."

How to use the iPad's new keyboard on iOS 9

After preparing, then updating your iPad to iOS 9, you'll quickly discover a lot of new features. New multitasking features enable a new slide-over mode, where you can peek at, and use, an app on the edge of your screen. Then there'ssplit-view, which allows you to run two apps at the same time. You can even watch a video while using another app with the new picture-in-picture feature.

Last of the new multitasking features is a new virtual keyboard. The keyboard can quickly turn into a trackpad for quickly navigating and editing text, and constantly offers tool shortcuts just above the keys for simply editing.

When typing with the keyboard, you can convert it to a trackpad by placing two fingers on the screen anywhere inside the keyboard. The keys will turn dark gray, losing all letters and numbers. You can move the cursor by dragging both fingers across the screen, lifting your fingers when the cursor has reached its destination.

You can use the same setup to highlight large blocks of text. Instead of placing two fingers on the screen, however, you'll quickly double-tap with two fingers (leaving both on the screen on the second tap). The nearest text word or character will become highlighted, with more text becoming highlighted as you drag your fingers across.

The trackpad functionality is easy to use as long as you remember one thing: spread your fingers apart just a little bit. For the first month or so of the public beta, I kept placing my fingers right next to each other and had issues. Once I figured this little trick out, life got a whole lot easier.

As you use the new keyboard throughout various apps, you'll notice just above the top row on either side of the QuickType suggestions are shortcut keys. The keys present will vary from app to app, but the gist is the same: these keys provide valuable shortcuts to commands such as copy, paste, undo and text formatting. Get in the habit of using then instead of long-pressing on the screen, highlighting the text, then navigating through the pop-up menu.

The same trackpad-like functionality will make its way to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, but not older models due to it requiring 3D Touch to activate.

How to get transit directions in Apple Maps on iOS 9

Three years after Apple broke away from bundling Google Maps into iOS, its replacement, Apple Maps, is finally getting proper public transit directions. Users were forced to rely on third-party apps such as Citymappper or Google Maps in order to get around.

The added functionality is part of Apple's iOS 9 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Using transit directions is similar to the walking or driving directions that've been in Apple Maps from the beginning. You start by searching where you want to go followed by tapping on the navigation button.

Along the top of the screen you'll find three modes of transportation: Driving, Walk, and Transit. Selecting Transit will display the quickest route by default, just as it does when selecting walking or driving.

You can preview the default route by tapping on it, just as you would directions for any other mode of transportation, or view alternative suggestions by tapping on the More Routes link (highlighted above). This link is also where you go when you want to customize the types of public transmit you want Maps to return, along with setting a custom departure or arrival time should you want to plan ahead by selecting Options in the top-right corner of the screen.

At launch, transit directions will be limited to select cities. Apple has posted a list of those cities here.

iPhone 6S and iPhone 6s Plus Reviews

      new-iphone-6s
Just as we expected, Apple announced the next versions of its best-selling smartphones, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, at its annual launch event in San Francisco. Also as we expected, the iPhone 6S looks identical to last year’s 4.7-inch iPhone 6, reserving its most important changes for the hardware interior.

The biggest, and most noticeable change to this year’s set of phones is “3D Touch,” a pressure-sensitive display technology that lets you push in to do new things on your phone. After getting a chance to check out the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus briefly at Apple’s San Francisco event, these were our impressions.
      Design: Feels the same

No surprise, but the new iPhones have nearly identical hand feel and design. Put one in someone’s hand, and there’s no way they’d know if it was an “S” model or not.

True, there is a new color now, called rose gold (it basically looks like a blush pink, same as the new Apple Watch color option that the company announced). But as far as looks go, this extra shade is the extent of the changes you’ll be able to visually detect between this year’s and last year’s phones.

Apple’s emphasis on hardware upgrades over design development follows the pattern that the Cupertino-based company has long established: significant changes come in the even years and incremental updates in the odd. It’s a move that could alienate buyers as much cheaper “premium” handsets compete with titans like Apple for market share.

However, significant updates to the iPhone 6S’ camera technology, a new form of pressure-sensitive navigation called 3D Touch, and a faster processor all combine to keep the next-generation phone looking competitive enough to counter other top-tier handsets as we approach the year-end holiday rush.

      Aerospace-grade aluminum and sturdier glass
Apple says that its phone may look the same as last year’s model, but its iPhone 6S duo has achieved more inner strength. This time it uses a different grade of aluminum for its chassis, one that’s also used in the aerospace industry. They call it Series 7,000, and it’s the same aluminum alloy Apple puts into its Apple Watch Sport. The company clearly hopes this reinforced material will help deflect against future “Bendgate” backlashes, where some customers complained that their 5.5-inch iPhone 6S phones “bent” after being sat on.

Apparently, a new type of chemically strengthened glass also tops the iPhone 6S, though the company hasn’t confirmed if this is cover material from Corning’s Gorilla Glass line or not.
Brand new ‘force’ touch: Subtle but effective

Apple has included a variation of Force Touch, which you find in different capacities on the Apple Watch and on some Mac trackpads. Called 3D Touch here, the iPhone 6S phones will adopt the same pressure-sensitive capability that calls up secondary menus and actions when you press and hold the screen.

Press down and you can pull up context-sensitive menus, switch apps, or examine photos. But it’s a subtle riff on what already exists on iPhones: tapping and holding.

Another use is to access shortcuts from the home screen for your most frequent actions, say messaging a friend. And if you’re in your email inbox, applying fingertip pressure to an element in the message will surface more information, like maybe the flight number on an emailed travel itinerary, for instance. (Apple called this concept “peeking in” during the live demo.)

Pressing harder on an app will likewise generate more options, like viewing all the photos of a contact’s Instagram photo stream. In the context of a game, pressing harder could zoom you in to get closer to the action.

We’re not sure why Force Touch was rebranded as 3D Touch, and it’s not necessarily a clearer term for what it does. But after using it for a bit, it’s undoubtedly something you’d want on every smartphone. In a couple of years, it seems like it would become as standard as multitouch. But the way it feels ends up coming across as pretty subtle. Menus gently pop up, photos slowly come alive. The iPhone throbs gently beneath via the Taptic Engine haptics, like on the Apple Watch. Pressing in didn’t cause a realistic, hard mechanical “click” in the same way that the new MacBook trackpads do. The implementation seems designed to feel invisible and comfortable, not weirdly magical.
      New hardware inside

The biggest news here is the hugely upgraded front and rear cameras and video capability, but there are a few other tidbits here and there as well.
Cameras and video with more megapixels

A 12-megapixel camera is a huge jump for Apple, which has been holding onto its 8-megapixel sensors in its iPhone for years. Autofocus will pick up the pace, according to Apple, and color accuracy is a point of pride.

The 5-megapixel front-facing camera now brings the iPhone 6S on par with a lot of today’s competing handsets. Of course, it includes the company’s proprietary voice chat feature, FaceTime video. Here’s something wildly different, though. Instead of including a dedicated flash for the front-facing camera, which only a few phones do, Apple is using the home screen to light up instead. This is meant to increase the brightness of those selfies even in low-light situations.

A few test selfies taken in the demo rooms looked really good, with crisper, richer color and details than previous iPhones.

A new feature you’ll see in the camera, Live Photos is a default mode that turns stills into a video or GIF, basically, images that move. It’s an automatic thing; all you have to do is take the picture like normal. When we took some shots in the crowded demo room, the iPhone seamlessly added Live Photo motion and sound. The Live Photo motion came out more like stop-motion or time lapse, however, than true video. It’s also important to note that one Live Photo is about twice the file size as a regular photo. Couple that with the 4K video capabilities (more on that later), and you’ll definitely need more storage space to accommodate.

Apple also joins rival phone makers in including 4K video recording, at 3,840×2,160-pixel resolution. You’ll be able to take 8-megapixel camera photos while recording at this ultrahigh resolution. (The immediate benefit of shooting 4K video would be watching them later on a 4K TV.)

Just like last year’s phones, the iPhone 6S Plus is the only model here with optical image stabilization, which helps correct blur from shaking hands.
      Touch ID

The second-generation sensor promises to snap open the phone faster than before. Hopefully fingerprint authentication will also speed up.
      Processor

Under the hood, we have an upgraded, proprietary A9 processor that continues Apple’s theme of mystery when it comes to exactly what’s going on in there. Though it’s impossible to appreciate during our quick demo, what we do know is that this is Apple’s third-generation 64-bit chip. Apple claims that the A9 is 70 percent faster than last year’s A8 when it comes to the usual computing tasks (like opening an app, for example), and 90 percent faster at graphical tasks, like gaming.
      Faster LTE, Wi-Fi connections

Apple says it’ll have the fastest forms of LTE Advanced, if that’s supported where you live, and will also include support for the latest, greatest Wi-Fi networks.

Hands on with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

      iphone 6s handson
“The only thing that’s changed is everything,” Apple said about the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus at Wednesday’s Apple event. That’s both true and untrue. The case looks pretty much the same, the screen sizes didn’t change, and the entry-level model still has a paltry 16GB of storage. But inside it’s an all-new iPhone with some impressive new capabilities.
I got hands-on time with the new models, and even though the presentation didn’t blow me away, the new 3D Touch and Live Photos features deliver a delightful experience.

      Live Photos

“What is a picture?” pondered Phil Schiller on stage. After more than an hour and a half of keynote, this wasn’t a philosophical debate I was excited about having. But he had a point: A photo is a still image of a moment, but a moment can have a beginning, middle, and end that one frame can’t always fully represent. Enter Apple’s new Live Photo feature. It’s on by default in the main Camera app, and if you leave it on, it automatically captures 1.5 seconds, er, moments before and after your shutter press.
That sounds like a video, but Apple says it’s not a video. These are 12-megapixel photos captured by the rear iSight camera, and if you send them to a friend who’s using iOS 9 or El Capitan, an animation comes with. (And if you send them anywhere else, they arrive as plain JPEGs like usual.)
Flipping through the Live Photos in the Camera Roll, you’ll see a little glimpse of the animation—it’s just enough motion to let you distinguish a Live Photo from a standard one. When you press harder on a Live Photo (a maneuver Apple calls 3D Touch on the new iPhones), you’ll see the full three seconds of motion.
I have a 3-year-old, and a lot of my photos of him wind up blurry because at least some part of his body is in motion virtually all of the time—the boy is a walking wiggle. I don’t think you get to scrub through a Live Photo frame by frame and pick out the single still image that’s not blurry, but getting to see an animation of one of his wiggles would beat any blurry photo, or one where his eyes are closed.
Developers will get to use Live Photos too—Facebook is working on supporting Live Photos, aiming to finish by the end of this year. But even if they never leave the iPhone itself, Live Photos are just delightful. You can even use one as your lock screen wallpaper, and then 3D Touch it to make it move.

      3D Touch

3D Touch, you ask? Yup, that’s the other big feature exclusive to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. It works just like Force Touch on the Apple Watch—you press harder, like you’re trying to push right through the screen, and that’s a different kind of touch than a regular swipe or tap. This will let you interact with apps (from Apple and third parties) in new ways.
For example, you can 3D Touch icons on the home screen for shortcuts to certain features: The Facebook icon hides shortcuts for changing your status or checking in, while the Camera app’s icon holds options for taking a selfie or shooting a new video. If you attempt to use 3D Touch on an icon that doesn’t support it (like Health), you’ll see the icon pop a little to let you know that the 3D Touch did in fact register, but nothing else is going to happen.
3D Touch gets even cooler once you open apps. You can use it to preview a new message in Mail, but it’s not quite as handy as Quick Look in OS X, because the preview disappears when you lift your finger back off the screen. During my hands-on time, I found myself 3D Touching a message, and then lifting my thumb to see what it says. But of course, the message preview vanishes, so I 3D Touch it again. And again, and again. It would be quicker to just tap the message to open it.
But the preview isn’t really for reading, it’s for quick triage. Apple calls the first preview the “peek,” and if you don’t lift your finger, you can swipe up, left, or down for options. Swipe right to mark the message as read—you’ll see a Mark As Read option as the preview slides to the right to remind you what will happen when you lift your finger.
Swipe left to delete the message. Swiping the message up produces buttons to reply, forward, flag, remind you about the message later, or move it elsewhere. Since you need to tap those buttons separately, the swipe-up move does fix the preview window in place.

      iphone6splus 3dtouch mail moreSUSIE OCHS
Swipe the preview up for the rest of your options. Now you can lift your finger in order to tap one of these buttons—the preview will stay onscreen while you decide.

After the “peek,” if you continue to press hard, you’ll open the message, a move Apple calls the “pop.” If you peek and don’t pop, the message doesn’t get marked as read, so peeking in is a quick way to see if an email is the droid you’re looking for without having to go back and mark it as unread if it wasn’t.
3D Touch does tons of things in Messages, too: Hard-press a name for options to call, FaceTime, add to contacts, and so on. Hard-press URLs to peek at them, and again to pop into Safari. Hard-press street addresses to see them on a map, or dates to make a calendar appointment. This should prevent a lot of switching back and forth between apps when you’re making plans with groups of friends.

      iphone 6s 3dtouch safariSUSIE OCHS
Safari’s Reading List will never be more than a 3D Touch away.

As with Live Photos, the 3D Touch feature is open to developers. For example, Facebook’s app icon has shortcuts to post a new status or check in right from your home screen. Instagram lets you 3D Touch everything, peeking into thumbnails and user profiles anywhere in the app. I asked if 3D Touch could be used to provide haptic feedback for an iPhone keyboard, and the rep didn’t think that was in the API just yet, but wasn’t totally sure. Still, even as it is today, I think 3D Touch has the potential to make Apple’s large-screened phones easier to navigate with one hand.
Early adopters of the Apple Watch had mixed feelings about Force Touch on that device. It’s unbelievably handy, but not exactly intuitive—there’s definitely a long learning curve before your brain remembers where to Force Touch and what you’ll find once you do, since every app can use it differently. In my short hands-on time with the iPhone, I had the same problems, but hopefully once the iPhone 6s is in my possession full-time, 3D Touch will quickly become second nature.

      Camera and hardware

The iPhone’s rear iSight camera has been upgraded to 12 megapixels, and can shoot 4K video. The improved FaceTime camera on the front can take 5-megapixel stills. I didn’t get to fully test either in the demo room, of course, but the shutter speed is crazy fast, and zooming in on the demo photos on each device revealed tons of detail. Panoramas are up to 63 megapixels now, and I love how their dedicated album in iOS 9 shows you the whole panorama in each thumbnail.
Besides the new cameras, though, the hardware is nearly the same. The second-generation Touch ID home button works faster, according to Apple, so we’ll do some side-by-side tests when we get our iPhone 6s review unit. The new rose gold color is really nice in person, and Apple was smart to release it alongside a rose gold-colored aluminum Apple Watch Sport, so you can match colors without having to mortgage your home for a rose gold Apple Watch Edition.

      iphone6s rose goldAPPLE
      Rose gold is really pretty.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are ever-so-slightly thicker than the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but only by two-tenths of a millimeter, so definitely not noticeable when you’re holding them. Cases for the new phones should fit the old phones, and cases for the old phones should fit the new ones, depending on their design and materials. All the buttons and ports are in the same place, and so is the camera.
Preorders start September 12, with the phones launching in the U.S. and 11 other countries starting September 25. We’ll have a full review up as soon as we can—post your questions in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer them!

This Australian could be the first to get a new iPhone 6S

      iPhone 6S

One Australian man is camping in front of Sydney’s flagship Apple store in the hopes of being the first person in the world to get his hands on the new iPhone — and it hasn’t even been announced yet.

On Tuesday morning, entrepreneur and technology journalist Lindsay Handmer staked his claim to a patch of cement outside the downtown store, first spotted by Australian CNET reporter Seamus Byrne, and has spent one night in his tent so far. Australia is often the first country to get Apple products, thanks to the international date line.

SEE ALSO: iPhone 6s to have ‘3D Touch’ three-level, next-gen Force Touch interface

The stunt is intended to promote his online secondhand technology marketplace, mysparetech.com, which also launched Tuesday. While sleeping rough, Handmer will be fundraising for Mission Australia, a service that helps the homeless. If he can manage to buy the first new iPhone, he’s also going to auction it off for the charity.

Starting a sales website requires a critical mass of people, and he thought camping out at Apple would be a good way to generate some publicity. “I thought I was really original … and then I googled it, and people have done it in every [Apple] line for the past few years,” he laughed.

Handmer could be living on the streets of Sydney for weeks, although he hopes the new smartphone will go on sale around Sept. 18. “Apple has done things in the exact same way over the past few years. I suspect that it’s going to be the same,” he said. “I’m here until they try and get rid of me or until I buy the first phone.”

So, what are his predictions for the Apple announcement that should come Sept. 10 at around 3 a.m. AEST? “An iPhone 6S and 6S Plus would be my guess,” he said. “There’s the Force Touch screen that seems to be the big thing, upgraded camera, and a bunch of little improvements. The S series phone always seems to be the one where they make improvements.”

It could be a tough wait until he finds out first hand. While it’s sunny in Sydney this week, it’s also quite chilly. “I’ve had a few regrets along the way. It’s an up and down process. I’ve only been here 24 hours now,” he said.

He’s not 100% sure if it’s legal to sleep here or not. Last night, a police car pulled in as he was setting up his tent. Two policemen got out, but they went into McDonald’s and didn’t give him a second glance.

For now, it’s just him out there. Once there’s more of a line, Handmer has some ideas for how to pass the time — he’s got some flashing party lights, and maybe they’ll get some music going.

He’s also been using the website Airtasker to outsource a few important jobs. Someone is coming by at 9 a.m. AEST to mind his spot while he gets some breakfast. A 24-hour McDonald’s with a bathroom is conveniently close to the Apple Store, and there are a couple of gyms around where he can take a shower. His fiancĂ©e is also going to come join him on the weekend.

Handmer’s met some interesting people so far, but he didn’t factor in that the Apple Store is right next to a busy bus stop. Still, he thinks he got eight hours sleep last night, despite the fact that Apple’s lights make it seem like the middle of the day in his tent. At about 11 a.m. AEST, the sun pokes through the skyscrapers, he said, so he’s going to recline his chair and take a nap.

The Apple Store staff are a bit disappointed though, because Handmer actually has a Dell computer and an HTC smartphone with him at the campsite. “I think Apple make great products, but I guess I like the more technical stuff. Android, for those types of things.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against people buying Apple products, I just prefer something different,” he said. “I just tend to opt for the more affordable side of stuff.”
